Pine (Pinus) is an iconic genus of evergreen coniferous trees and shrubs. Unlike spruces, pine needles grow in bundles (fascicles) of two, three, or five. Light: Requires full sun (6+ hours of direct sunlight daily). Thins out significantly in heavy shade. Watering: Needs regular watering while young. Once established, pines are exceptionally drought-tolerant and prefer drier soil conditions. Soil: Extremely adaptable; thrives even in poor, sandy, gravelly, or acidic soils, provided there is excellent drainage. Temperature & Pruning: Highly cold-hardy and wind-resistant. Minimal pruning required; pinch back spring shoots ("candles") before needles expand to control size and encourage a dense growth habit.
